Not bothering to knock, the smell of stale liquorice sat heavily in the closed space mixing with the aroma of spiced rum.

The room was in total disarray from the time it sat in its graveyard. Empty bottles and barrels littered the oval table in the centre of the cramped cabin. Maps were thrown off the table, laying forgotten on the ground and decaying from the exposure of the realm.

Up at the back of the cabin were two steps to another level where a narrow drawing desk sat askew, looking out a stained-glass window that caught the glow of the sparkling white moon beautifully.

Tiptoeing over the mess on the floor, I wondered who once owned the vessel. The rotting parchments were written in languages I couldn’t read or recognise. Drawings of people with unusual features and unearthly beauty were sprawled across the ground.

What had happened to those who once sailed the ship?

“Never heard of knocking, sweetheart?” Kaiden asked, his voice causing me to jump. He was lounging across an unmade bunk tucked into the dark corner of the cabin. His hands were resting behind his head, his shirt nowhere to be seen, and his breeches hung low enough to show the dark path of hair travelling from his navel down under the fabric.

“This place is a mess.”

“Thanks mum, I will be sure to tidy it right away,” Kaiden snipped.

Sidestepping, I came to the oval table. I placed the bottle of rum down and gripped the back of a mossy damp chair. “We need to talk.”

“I am all ears, sweetheart,” Kaiden drawled.

“You aren’t telling me everything Kaiden, and I am fed up walking into every scenario blinder than a bat. You need to start telling me everything you know.”

Pushing himself to the edge of the bed, his breeches lowered with the movement. They were hanging on for dear life around his hips. I found myself wanting them to drop. Twitching fingers begged to be the one to pull him free.

“What more is there you need to know? We are sailing to the Collapsing Caverns. When we get there, we must sail through them and not around them. That bit is important,” Kaiden stated. “Nothing more you need to know; the rest is all in good time.”

“Gods, you make me want to stab you.”
